Ardbeg 1997 Very Young For Discussion is a single malt Scotch whisky from the Ardbeg Distillery, located in the Islay region of Scotland. This whisky was distilled in 1997 and bottled in 2003, making it six years old. It was matured in first fill casks and has an ABV (alcohol by volume) of 58.9%. This release is particularly notable for its collectability among Ardbeg enthusiasts, with only 4,002 bottles produced.
Tasting Note
Nose
The aroma is characterised by coal smoke, pine needles, and violin rosin. There are also notes of moss, ashy charcoal, ground almonds, smoked Iberian ham, and a distinctive citrus note of dried limes. Delicate hints of vanilla pod and white chocolate are backed by olive oil and subtle blackberry.
Palate
On the palate, it is medium to light in body but full-flavoured. The initial zing of lime sherbet and a whack of ginger heat are prominent. It is wonderfully fresh, with flavors of smoked green apples, white grape, elderflower, lemon drizzle cake, and smoked ham. There are also some milk chocolate notes with a touch of green pepper and subtle Chinese five spice — cinnamon, star anise, and clove.
Finish
The finish is medium-length, with sweet and savoury notes fading quickly, leaving lingering flavours of wood smoke, parsley, green apple, cucumber, and fennel.
