Akkeshi Sarorunkamuy Lightly Peated Single Malt Japanese Whisky is the first official single malt release from the Akkeshi Distillery, located in a National Park on the northern Hokkaido Island of Japan. The distillery, which began production in 2016, aims to blend traditional Scottish methods with the unique flavours of Akkeshi, Japan. The town of Akkeshi has a cool, moist climate with frequent rolling sea fog, which is ideal for producing whisky with characteristics similar to Islay malts.
This expression, named “Sarorunkamuy” which translates to “white crane” in Ainu, is aged in a combination of Mizunara, bourbon, sherry, and red wine casks. It has been aged for a minimum of 3 years and was bottled in 2020. The whisky is lightly peated and has an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 55%.
Tasting Note
Nose
Delightful notes of strawberry, chocolate, yuzu citrus, cherries, and vanilla.
Palate
The whisky offers a harmonious blend of flavours, including the sweetness of strawberries and cherries, the richness of chocolate, and the citrusy freshness of yuzu. Vanilla adds a creamy undertone to the overall profile.
Finish
The finish is smooth and lingering, with the light peat providing a subtle smokiness that complements the sweet and fruity notes.
