The Akkeshi Sarorunkamuy Lightly Peated Single Malt Japanese Whisky, a Duty Free Exclusive from 2020, is a remarkable expression from the Akkeshi Distillery, which is located in the northernmost island of Hokkaido, Japan. Akkeshi Sarorunkamuy is the distillery’s first official single malt release, translating to “white crane” in the Ainu language. This whisky is a testament to the distillery’s commitment to capturing the essence of its locale, aged in a combination of Mizunara, bourbon, sherry, and red wine casks. The use of these diverse casks contributes to the complexity and depth of the whisky’s profile. It is lightly peated, offering a subtle smokiness that complements its rich array of flavours. The whisky is bottled at 55% ABV, ensuring a robust and full-bodied experience.
Tasting Note
Colour
Deep copper, indicating a rich and concentrated spirit.
Nose
The aroma is a complex blend of fermented peat, roasted chestnuts, and baked bread, with hints of toluene and imo. There are also delicate floral notes of eau de rose and rye toast, reminiscent of a dunnage warehouse.
Palate
The palate is greeted with an extremely thick and peaty distillate, akin to Port Charlotte, with layers of pear and honey. There are also flavours of malty cornbread and bubblegum, adding to its complexity.
Finish
The finish is medium in length, with a unique combination of sour chocolate and pressed lavender, followed by molasses, hay, and pistachio.
