Ardbeg Supernova 2010, also known as SN2010, is a single malt Scotch whisky from the Ardbeg distillery. It is the second limited release in the Supernova series and is known for its high peat content. Bottled at a cask strength of 60.1% ABV, this whisky is renowned for its intense peatiness and complex flavour profile. The Supernova series was initially recognised for having one of the highest phenol levels in the world, with the 2010 edition peated to around 100 PPM (parts per million) of phenols.
Tasting Note
Nose
The initial aroma is dominated by vegetative peat, sea salt, and a slight ashiness. There are herbal notes, particularly liquorice, and hints of damp earth and wet rope. Subtle vanilla and faint sugar notes emerge, along with lemons, roasted coffee beans, and a touch of mint. Adding water can make the nose fresher, reducing the peat and enhancing lemon, bonfire smoke, and a hint of burned rubber.
Palate
The palate starts with a sweet kind of peat, accompanied by wet rope in the background. Sweet vanilla is prominent initially, followed by salt and significant heat due to the high ABV. White pepper and bonfire smoke with a hint of BBQ smoked bacon are also present. Herbal notes reappear, and water can bring out more liquorice and sugar notes while reducing the heat.
Finish
The finish is long, with plenty of peat and salt. The peatiness is noticeable but not as overwhelming as expected, and a few drops of water can make the finish less aggressive and more subtle.
