Ardbeg Dark Cove is a limited-edition single malt Scotch whisky released in 2016 to celebrate Ardbeg Day, part of the annual Islay Festival. It is known as the darkest Ardbeg ever, a title earned from its maturation in dark sherry casks, which impart a deep, rich color and complex flavors. The whisky is non-age-statement (NAS) and bottled at 46.5% ABV. The inspiration behind Dark Cove harks back to the illicit beginnings of whisky production in Scotland, specifically referencing the secret coves used by smugglers before the official founding of the Ardbeg distillery in 1815.
Tasting Note
Appearance
The whisky has a deep, dark color reminiscent of copper stills in moonlight.
Nose
The aroma is rich and complex, featuring dark chocolate, treacle toffee, and hints of distant bonfires. Additional notes include spice, pie filling, sherry, molasses, vanilla, cinnamon, and apple.
Palate
On the palate, the whisky reveals layers of flavors such as brine, smoke, seaweed, and ash. There are also hints of smouldering charcoal, wood polish, raisins, dates, and ginger, emerging from shadows of tarry creosote. The taste evolves with time, revealing a subtle sweetness and broad richness that evokes campfire marshmallows.
Finish
The finish is long and spicy, with lingering notes of peat, smoke, and marshmallow. Some tasters note a burst of peat on the back palate, balanced by the other flavors after oxidation.
