Akkeshi Seimei Peated Single Malt 2022 is a distinctive Japanese whisky that is part of the “Twenty-Four Solar Terms” series from Akkeshi Distillery. Each whisky in this series is designed to represent one of the 24 seasonal divisions of the year used in East Asia. The Seimei edition corresponds to the 5th solar term, which heralds the beginning of spring, a time when nature starts to awaken from the winter dormancy.

Akkeshi Seimei Peated Single Malt 2022 is crafted using a blend of peated and unpeated malts. The whisky is primarily aged in ex-bourbon barrels, which contribute to its complex flavour profile. The distillery utilises traditional Scottish methods and equipment for distillation, including Forsyth’s pot stills and a non-adjustable stainless steel fermentation tank. This meticulous process ensures a high-quality product that captures the essence of its unique terroir.

The Akkeshi distillery is located in a region known for its peat deposits and maritime climate, which significantly influences the flavour of the whisky. The use of local Mizunara oak barrels for aging adds another layer of distinctiveness to this whisky.

Tasting Note

Nose

The Akkeshi Seimei offers a rich and inviting aroma with notes of caramel, burnt orange, and toasted sesame seeds. The peaty character is evident but not overpowering, providing a smooth introduction to the whisky’s complex profile.

Palate

On the palate, Seimei presents a harmonious blend of flavours including chocolate wafers, brown sugar, and a hint of Meyer lemon. The peat adds depth without dominating, creating a balanced taste that also includes subtle notes of peach and citrus reminiscent of yuzu miso dressing. The addition of water can enhance the sweetness and bring forward the saltiness, reminiscent of Hokkaido’s coastal wetlands.

Finish

The finish is smooth and lingering, characterised by flavours of bittersweet chocolate and a pleasant peaty aftertaste. The overall experience is one of a well-rounded whisky that beautifully marries the peaty and sweet elements.
