Akkeshi Shosetsu 2023 is a blended whisky that marks the 13th release in the Akkeshi Distillery’s “Twenty-Four Solar Terms” series, specifically representing the 20th solar term. This term, known as “Shosetsu,” symbolizes the onset of winter, characterised by the first snows seen on mountain peaks and a noticeable drop in temperature.

The Akkeshi Shosetsu is crafted using water sourced from the Homakai River, which is known for its clarity and is essential for the unique flavour profile of the whisky. The distillery’s location in Akkeshi, Hokkaido, with its cool, moist climate and peat-rich environment, plays a crucial role in the whisky’s characteristics.

Tasting Note

Nose

The Akkeshi Shosetsu offers a complex bouquet of aromas. It begins with a distinct note of “Potapota-yaki,” a hot egg omelet seasoned with soy sauce, which blends into hints of honey and lemon, enriched with a subtle touch of raisins

Palate

On the palate, this whisky presents a harmonious blend of smoky and citrusy notes. The smokiness is well-balanced with a citrusy acidity and sweetness, creating a refreshing yet deep flavour profile.

Finish

The finish of Akkeshi Shosetsu is memorable, featuring “Poivre rosé” and orange sauce, complemented by a hint of salted lemon. This combination provides a lingering, sophisticated aftertaste that invites further sipping.
