Ardbeg Corryvreckan is a single malt Scotch whisky from the Isle of Islay, named after the famous whirlpool located north of Islay. This whisky is known for its intense and bold character, much like the whirlpool it is named after. It is bottled at cask strength, with an ABV of 57.1%, and is non-chill filtered. The whisky is matured in a combination of ex-bourbon casks and French oak casks, which contribute to its complex flavor profile. Ardbeg Corryvreckan has received numerous accolades, including being awarded the World’s Best Single Malt in 2010 by the World Whiskies Awards.
Tasting Note
Nose
Heady, intense, and powerful with a collision of waxy dark chocolate, warm blackcurrants, and muscovado sugar. Salty seasoning brings a briny character with tangy crisp seaweed and smoky bacon, complemented by hints of sweet vanilla, spicy cloves, and blueberries.
Palate
Deep, peppery, and chewy, with torrents of taste bombarding the tongue. Chewy peppered steak soaked in pepper sauce, crispy seaweed, black tarry espresso coffee, rich melted dark fruits (blackcurrants, blueberries, and cherries), and bitter almonds. Star anise and hickory dry out the palate before a surprise of chalky effervescent violets.
Finish
Long, deep, and powerful with black tarry coffee, chocolate-coated cherries, and hot pepper sauce. The finish leaves lingering memories of the mysterious and daring journey into Corryvreckan.
